Today, Friday, June 4 marks the sixth National Fish and Chip Day in the United Kingdom.
The holiday was first organised by The National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association (NEODA) and, according to their website, is about “giving fish and chips the recognition it deserves and helping to secure its position in the eyes of both consumers and the media as the nation’s favourite dish.”
It is also part of an effort to support industries across the UK, including fish and chip shops, restaurants, and food service establishments.
To help celebrate the day, we asked readers to share what they think is the best fish and chip shop in Coventry.
And while lots of chippies had their names thrown into the hat by loyal customers, there was one which appeared to be a favourite of many.
Here is what our readers had to say…
Jodie Baylis: “St. George’s Plaice on Charter Avenue. Fish always freshly cooked to order rather than sitting there for hours.”
Macczak Malvina: “Kahawa Cafe has the best food! Always fresh food and lovely cafe, recommended.”
Meena Birk: “Back in the day when I lived in Coventry, the best chippy was Venus Fish Bar on Holbrook Lane.”
Craig Perrey: ” Aldermoor Fish Bar hands down.”
There were numerous shops mentioned, in a wide variety of locations. However, the majority of readers seemed to share their enthusiasm for one shop in particular.
Bernie Siddall: “Charlie’s Plaice, hands down never had a bad bag, ever! Best quality around!”
Natalie Kyle: “They say you pay for what you get,the cheaper it is the poorer quality of the food. Charlie’s Plaice is by far the best in Coventry.”
Numerous other readers shared the enthusiasm for Charlie’s Place:
Katherine Jones: “Charlie’s Plaice, Sewall Highway.”
Craig Melia: “Charlie’s Plaice! Or another place in Sutton on sea as 2nd. Charlie’s is deffo first!”
Regardless of preference, one thing seems to be certain and that is that there are plenty of places to visit today around Coventry to help celebrate National Fish and Chip Day.
