Juan de Jongh is leaving Wasps after four seasons to return to South Africa and play for the Stormers.
The 33-year-old centre joined the Black and Golds ahead of the 2017/18 season and played a key role in the side that reached the Premiership play-offs, starting against Saracens in the semi-final defeat.
However, the arrival of Malakai Fekitoa and a frustrating run of injuries has limited de Jongh to just 16 appearances in Wasps’ last 54 games in all competitions.
With his contract reaching its conclusion this summer, de Jongh has been heavily linked with a return to the Stormers – the club he left in 2017 to head to Coventry.
de Jongh’s confirmed departure follows previous announcements that Lima Sopoaga (Lyon), Jack Owlett and Sione Vailanu (both Worcester Warriors), Will Rowlands (Dragons), Tommy Taylor (Sale Sharks) and Ben Vellacott (Edinburgh) are all leaving the club.
The 19 times capped Springboks said: “I would like to thank Dai Young and Derek Richardson for giving me the opportunity to be part of the amazing Wasps family. I would also like to thank Lee Blackett and all the coaching and backroom staff that have taught me so much.
“I have really enjoyed my four seasons at Wasps and all credit must go to my teammates that have made it so enjoyable on and off the field for me.
“I have made some great friends during my time at the club, and I will try my best to finish off the season strongly. I wish the Wasps family all the best for the future!”
Players who have been confirmed as joining Wasps so far Ali Crossdale (Saracens), Francois Hougaard (Worcester Warriors), Elliott Stooke (Bath), Dan Frost (Cornish Pirates), Elliot Millar-Mills (Ealing Trailfinders), Robin ‘Bomber’ Hislop (Doncaster Knights) and Luke Mehson.
Blackett confirmed earlier this week that Wasps’ transfer business isn’t finished yet, he said: “We’re hopefully very close to signing a back-rower and ideally a second row at some point and we are looking for quality in those positions, probably that have all played top-flight rugby.”
Kieran Brookes is expected to join Toulon while CoventryLive understands that Simon McIntyre, Theo Vukasinovic, Rob Miller, Ben Morris and Callum Sirker are also out-of-contract. However, some players could have agreed extensions but have not yet been announced publicly by Wasps.
At one stage, Wasps had four South Africans in the form of Ashley Johnson, Willie le Roux and Nizaam Carr – who have all moved on in recent seasons.
However, many media outlets have linked Wasps with Pretoria-born tighthead prop Pieter Scholtz from the Scarlets.
Wasps have moved to extend the contracts of numerous players in recent months including Charlie Atkinson, Tom Cruse, Paolo Odogwu, Josh Bassett, Tim Cardall and Ben Harris.
