Covid infection rates are starting to soar in Worcestershire postcodes as the county tackles the emergence of two variants.
The worst-hit postcode is Ronkswood and Nunnery Wood, which now has an infection rate of 183.2 per 100,000 people according to an interactive map by Public Health England.
Several Covid cases were recently confirmed at Nunnery Wood Primary School, with the ‘relevant bubbles’ being forced to self-isolate at home.
There are several other Worcester neighbourhoods where the number of new Covid cases has increased dramatically, including King George’s Field, Battenhall & Diglis and Lyppard Grange.
Overall Covid case numbers remain low in Worcestershire but the progress made during lockdown is now threatened by the emergence of two variants, including the one first identified in India.
Dr Kathryn Cobain, director for public health in Worcestershire, recently confirmed there were ‘isolated cases’ of the Indian variant of the virus in the county.
It comes just days after another variant – one first identified in South Africa – was identified in Redditch, leading to a surge testing operation in certain postcodes.
In a statement, Dr Cobain stressed there was currently no evidence to suggest the new variants caused more severe illness.
However, she urged residents in the affected areas to follow the guidelines and take the appropriate tests regularly.
