Coventry City defender Declan Drysdale has celebrated promotion to League One with Cambridge United.
The U’s confirmed their promotion on the final day of the League Two season, securing a 3-0 win over Grimsby Town at the Abbey Stadium.
Although the 21-year-old Sky Blues defender was an unused substitute on the day, he had played his part in helping them secure their League One status, making 13 appearances and scoring one goal for Mark Bonner’s men who finished runners up to Cheltenham Town, and narrowly missing out on the title by just a few points.
United are back in the third tier of English football for the first time since the 2001/02 campaign, ending a seven-year stay in League Two by securing automatic promotion on the final day of the campaign.
It is the second promotion that the U’s have experienced in the space of eight seasons, with United promoted to the Football League at the end of the 2013/14 season.
It is also the seventh Football League promotion that the club have achieved since their election in 1970.
Having finished no higher than ninth in the six seasons following promotion to League Two, the U’s have produced a terrific campaign to go up.
“It’s massive. We are competing well above where we were expected to be, where our resources have been this season,” head coach Mark Bonner said.
Centre-half Drysdale followed up his loan spell with League One Gillingham in the first half of the season with a successful stint with Cambridge, for whom he proved his versatility by playing in central midfield on a couple of occasions.
A development squad signing from Tranmere Rovers in the summer of 2019, Drysdale has made five senior appearances for City so far while being farmed out to play men’s football at Solihull Moors as well and Gillingham and Cambridge Utd.
Here’s what Sky Blues fans have been saying about the young development player:
Myles Cadden: Congratulations Cambridge and Declan Drysdale. Now break into the City first team.
The Coventry King: … this guy is the next van Dijk at Coventry.
Jim Dryden: Great job Declan…you specialise in promotions, how many now?
Boab: Love it big man.
Thomas Ripley: Come back soon.
