Rio Ferdinand has labelled Chelsea’s treatment of Tammy Abraham as ‘crazy’ with the striker seemingly on course to quit the club in the summer transfer window.
Abraham is being linked with a return to Aston Villa when the window reopens having become frustrated with his lack of game-time since Thomas Tuchel was appointed Chelsea’s manager.
The 23-year-old was a key player under predecessor Frank Lampard, scoring 18 goals last term and 11 this season before Lampard was sacked in January.
Abraham has played just six times under Tuchel, adding only one goal to his tally, with his last start coming back in February.
Abraham had been nursing an ankle injury but little has changed for the forward since returning to fitness, with Tuchel preferring other options in attack such as Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, who has played as a false nine at times.
Werner has just one goal in his last 13 appearances but Abraham was given only three minutes off the bench against West Ham on Saturday and remained an unused substitute in the midweek Champions League draw with Real Madrid.
Ferdinand feels Tuchel’s treatment of the England international has been unfair compared to the patient stance the German coach is taking with Werner.
The former Manchester United defender told BT Sport: “It’s crazy, a young player… does he get the time that Timo Werner – a big signing – gets when they come in?
“And they’re not treated with as much care or understanding of their character, and with the cotton wool that a new signing gets.
“I know it’s an investment but also you’re investing in a young player. A young player adds so much value to a team and they don’t ever get that time, that patience a new signing gets.
“Tammy wouldn’t get the time that Timo gets.”

It emerged this week that Chelsea are reportedly willing to cash in on the former Villa loan favourite this summer with their asking price standing at around £40million.
Villa’s desire to upgrade the attacking options in Dean Smith’s squad this summer is no secret and Abraham still has admirers at the club from his loan spell.
The forward netted 26 times in 40 appearances to fire Villa to promotion from the Championship in the 2019/20 season.
