Boris Johnson has said the Government wants to determine whether offering “Covid status certificates” could help venues to open again.

On Monday he confirmed that a study into the use of vaccine and testing certificates will be one of four reviews conducted as part of easing the current restrictions.

But how do people in Leicestershire feel about carrying a vaccine passport?

We asked our readers on our Facebook page how they would feel holding one to get them into pubs and clubs.

Hundreds of you replied – with a mixed response.

Many people were in favour of the idea, although several pointed out that there would need to be exemptions to ensure those that could not have the vaccine would not be discriminated against.

George Bailey wants to see it rolled out to all entertainment venues. He said: “Yeah great idea. I’ve no issues having one. Hopefully other countries, airlines and entertainment venues will require it.”

Jenny Mason replied: “I don’t see an issue with it as long as those who can’t have the vaccine for medical reasons are not discriminated against.

John Goddard is keen on the idea. He said: “The sooner the better. Those who refuse the jab won’t be allowed to mix with us.”

Viv Duggan didn’t see it any different to documentation we already carry around. She said: “We all carry driving licence and bus passes etc what’s the difference great idea.”

Maureen Mo Bullimore would be proud to carry hers. She said: “I would be proud too, for those who cant have it for specific medical reasons they could have a special exempt one.”

Nick Parnell said: “Other countries will require it for travel. To get out of this mess I think its the only way. For those truly medically exempt then something needs to be included to cater for them.

Elizabeth Reeve said: “Brilliant idea, why should 4/5 of the population be restricted because a fifth object to the vaccine.

“If there is a medical reason no vaccine can be given, exemptions should be made.”

Many people were against the idea however.

Hannah Louise Ferla was worried about the people who can’t have the vaccine for medical reasons. She said: “But some people can’t have the vaccine because they have side effects with some of the ingredients in it so how can that be fair it’s not there choice they can’t have it.”

Paul Rush had similar feelings. He said: “Those who can’t have vaccine for medical reasons could face discrimination, so I believe it’s a bad idea.”

Kinga Fisher said: “I think it wouldn’t be fair to those who are unable to have the vaccine for her medical reasons.

Oliver Rimington said: “This won’t work. Not all the population will be inoculated by May, so only those that have had the vaccine would be able to go to the pub? You therefore get penalised for your health bracket?

Emily Stephen thinks it would be unfair to implement this on a local level. She said: “I think this is inevitable in some form to enable international travel but on a domestic level I don’t see the benefit and think it would be harmful and divisive unless in wasn’t implemented until the majority of the population had received the vaccine at which time what would be the point?

“Younger people who are not at great risk from covid have sacrificed a lot (quite rightly) to protect older and more vulnerable friends and relatives over the last year, it would be hideously unfair should those people who were protected then be able to resume normal life whilst others couldn’t.

“The spirit that we are all in this together should remain until the end and is the most sensible way out anyway, stick together and get back to normal together when we all can.”
