Plans are set to be submitted to transform a private school’s former tennis courts into a new housing development.

Rydal Penrhos School sold the site on Oak Drive in Colwyn Bay as part of a reorganisation of its facilities.

Now Northfield Property Development wants to build 29 residential units on the land.

Agent Cadnant Planning have been commissioned to undertake a pre-application consultation.

They said: “The proposal relates to a full application for residential development at the former sports court, Oak Drive, Colwyn Bay.

“A total of 29 residential units would be provided comprising of 11 detached dwellings and 18 apartments.

“The site was previously used as tennis courts by Rydal Penrhos School, prior to becoming surplus to requirement and subsequently sold as part of a redevelopment of facilities at Rydal Penrhos to provide a twenty-first century education for its pupils.

“Rydal Penrhos is a private school and therefore the tennis courts were only available for use by pupils and was not a community facility.

”The proposal would provide a good range of housing types to include two- and three-bed apartments and four- and five-bed detached family dwellings. Five affordable housing units would be provided on site together with a financial contribution equivalent to 0.8 unit.

“The affordable units would provide a mix of intermediate and social units as per discussions with the council’s housing services team.”

They said a new vehicular access is proposed off Oak Drive with a new private internal access road.

Some trees are proposed to be removed due to their poor condition and in order to facilitate the development but Cadnant said all efforts have been made to retain the existing trees.
