With the light at the end of the lockdown tunnel looking a little brighter, people are allowing themselves to wonder about what the rest of 2021 could bring.

So are you thinking about catching up on family time, going on a much-needed holiday or perhaps the chance to see some live music?

If it’s the latter and you’re from Coventry then you may be wondering if the city’s Godiva Festival could be on the cards with the announcement that large-scale events could return from the summer.

It will have been been two years since we last got to enjoy the sights and sounds of the music extravaganza on the fields of the War Memorial Park with the 2020 event cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

CoventryLive wondered exactly the same thing so we contacted the organisers at Coventry City Council to ask if 2021 will see a Godiva Festival.

In response a council spokesman said: “We are currently reviewing the information published by the government and we are mindful that only the first stages of the roadmap have dates that are firm commitments.

“We will be assessing the implications for all city events. At this stage it is too soon to take a decision on which events will be able to go ahead.”

The last time that thousands of music fans descended upon the War Memorial Park for the much-loved festival was in 2019 when acts such as Feeder, Busted, The Selecter and The Levellers wowed the crowds.

One of the many endearing factors about the Godiva Festival for many years was that it was free entry – but that all changed in the last couple of years.

Initially an £2 “admin fee” was put in place for 2019 and then it had been decided, before it was cancelled, that tickets would need to be bought for the 2020 festival.

These were going to be priced at £12 for an on-the-door ticket on Saturday night, with an early bird offer costing between £4-6 for adults per day or £12.50 for a three-day ticket.

Despite criticism that the move had “destroyed” what was once billed the UK’s biggest free music festival, the man in charge of the council’s finances at the time defended the decision.

Cllr John Mutton said in February 2020: “The majority of people that have responded are saying it is still well worth it.

“I hope they will be saying that as they should be able to get even better acts there now.”
