Police have seized a guard dog which attacked two little girls in a street in Saltley.
The tots, aged two and three, were walking with a woman on St Saviour’s Road, just after 12.35pm on Monday (Feb 8) when they were set upon by the guard dog which had run away from a local business.
The three-year-old sustained hand and leg injuries in the attack while the two-year-old suffered scratch marks and leg injuries.
Both were taken on blue lights by paramedics to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
The dog has been seized and an investigation is underway into the horrific incident.
A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to reports of a dog attack in St Saviour’s Road, Birmingham just after 12.30pm this afternoon (8 February).
“It’s understood that a guard dog escaped from a nearby business premises before attacking two small children.
“A three-year-old girl sustained hand and leg injuries after being bitten.
“A second child, aged two, sustained scratch marks and a leg injury.
“The dog has been seized by police and enquiries are ongoing.”
The incident took place just three days after a woman was killed in Kitts Green by her pet dog.
A graphic video – which Birmingham Live has decided not to publish – shows the dog launching upon the three, pining them to the ground against a wall.
Screams are then heard as the woman desperately tries to fight off the persistent animal as it drags one of the girl’s along the ground in its mouth.
Passing motorists and residents step in and try and help. One man from a car tries to get the child away from the jaws of the dog and kicks at it as it fights back.
The dog circles and the two girls are placed in the car for their safety.
The road clears and brave by-standers use wheelie bins to try to defend themselves against the roaming animal.
The dog continues to roam around, standing in the middle of the road.
West Midlands Ambulance Service said they received five calls regarding the vicious attack.
An ambulance service spokesman said: “We had multiple calls reporting a dog attack on two young girls on St Saviour’s Road in the Saltley area of Birmingham at around 12.35pm this lunchtime.
“An ambulance was immediately sent to the scene.
“On arrival, the crew found the two girls, one with serious injuries.
“They were both assessed and treated at the scene before being taken on blue lights to Birmingham Children’s Hospital where medics were awaiting their arrival.
“Their condition is not life threatening.”
