Former Coventry City defender Tom Davies has dropped back down a division in a bid to put an injury nightmare behind him.

The 28-year-old was a popular member of the Sky Blues’ League Two promotion winning squad, having joined the club from Portsmouth in the summer of 2017.

He then joined League One side Bristol Rovers in 2019 to get more regular first team football but today moved north to join fourth tier strugglers Barrow on loan for the rest of the season.

The centre-back has not played a competitive game for almost a year after battling tendinitis and undergoing operations in both knees.

Davies has impressed Rovers’ coaches with his recovery and has been taking a full part in training in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, Rovers boss Paul Tisdale said Davies was “racing” against time to prove his match fitness before the end of January to have a chance of making his 22-man squad, which has to be named shortly after the transfer window expires.

But ultimately it proved a risk too far for Tisdale, reports our sister title BristolLive, to include Davies given his record of injuries and he heads to League Two Barrow until the end of the season, when his contract at the Mem is set to expire.

Davies joined Rovers from Coventry City in the summer of 2019, and impressed as part of Graham Coughlan’s back three before injuries took hold in the autumn.

The former Portsmouth and Accrington Stanley defender has made 22 appearances for the Gas in all competitions, scoring once – a winner against MK Dons in October 2019.

Davies remains a popular figure among the Gas fanbase after a series of commanding defensive displays but with his deal set to expire in the summer, he may well have played his final game for the club.
