The doors of a new independent Clarendon Park eatery open from 9am today.

Portuguese cafe and bar Port and Nata offers a range of food and drink for customers to take away.

As we revealed last month, the new venue is launching in the Queens Road property which formerly housed Jones’ Cafe Bistro, which closed last year.

Port and Nata opened for one day, on Christmas Eve, when it offered a selection of food and drink and a mini shop, with items such as coffee, biscuits, cakes, and bottles of port.

Now, with the new sign above the door, the eatery opens again from 9am today – but we were invited in early to bring you a sneak peek.

Those visiting today will be able to enjoy a special opening offer on pasteis de nata, which will be £7.95 for a box of six instead of the usual price of £9.95.

Port and Nata will also be serving its street food menu with dishes like bifana and Portuguese garlic steak sandwich, as well as street boxes which you can stack with a variety of fillings. Options include tomato rice, rustic potatoes, Portuguese fried chicken and beef with port wine sauce.

Drinks will include Portuguese coffee Delta Cafe, and Portuguese drinks such as Sumol and Compal.

The cafe and bar is being opened by brother and sister Miteche and Grichma Trambaclal, in honour of their late mother.

Miteche told LeicestershireLive: “Our parents always had a dream of opening a restaurant. Unfortunately our mother passed away last year in August at only 52 years old.

“We wanted to create something in her memory. She loved a glass of wine and especially Port wine. She loved hosting and making lots of food and we are hoping to have different tastes of Portugal to represent how she used to make lots of different food when we had gatherings and friends and family around.

“We want to create that homely atmosphere. Just like she used to.”

According to Miteche, the ‘Port’ part of the name comes from inho do porto, commonly known as port wine, and the ‘Nata’ part of the name is derived from the famous Portuguese custard tarts or pasteis de nata.

Miteche added that the restaurant’s anchor symbol represents the old ships that used to dock on the Douro River, which flows through Portugal.

You’ll find Port and Nata at 93 Queens Road, Clarendon Park.

Current opening times are: Saturday 9am-8pm, Sunday 10am-5pm, Monday closed, Tuesday-Friday 11am-8pm. A delivery service is set to launch soon.
