Students will not have to pay for their empty University of Birmingham -operated accommodation if they have been unable to return due to the latest coronavirus lockdown.
The institution confirmed a 100 percent fee rebate for rent covering the period from January 11 to February 12.
It comes after students in halls at Birmingham City University had their rent waived or reduced. While Aston University said their accommodation provider UNITE Students had cut rent by half at 13 city sites over the next month.
Scores of city students across all universities have been unable to return to their digs after the Government ordered a third national lockdown to begin on January 6. As it stands it will last until at least February 15.
Issuing an update, the University of Birmingham said: “The University today confirmed a 100 percent accommodation fee rebate for all University-operated and nominated student accommodation, covering an initial period from 11 January to 12 February 2021, for those students who have been asked by the Government not to return to campus and are therefore not using their rooms.
“Those on a meal package will also not be charged for the food element of their rent during this period.
“This rebate period has been aligned with the current Government guidance in relation to travel restrictions and national lockdown. This remains a fast-moving situation and as such when Government guidance is updated, and in advance of 12 February, the position will be reviewed and shared with students.
“Students will need to confirm that they are not in residence during that period to be eligible for the rebate and will be contacted shortly.”
UNITE Students said they would also offer a free four-week accommodation extension for students this summer.
“We’re announcing a 50 percent rental discount for eligible students for a four week period from 18 January to 14 February 2021,” it said.
“In addition, eligible students can also participate in a four-week extension to the end of their tenancy at no extra charge. This is so you can finish any studies, carry on with part-time work, or enjoy summer in your university city.”
Eligible students must submit an online request no latter than January 22.
