Robins gives update on second transfer target

Coventry City have been quick to act in the January transfer window by drafting in Leicester City midfielder Matty James on loan.

The 29-year-old was handed his debut from the bench for the Sky Blues at the weekend in the 2-0 FA Cup third round defeat at Norwich City, going on as a second half substitute for Ben Sheaf at Carrow Road.

James has come in to fill the void left by skipper Liam Kelly, who is sidelined for three months with a groin strain, and going on his first showing in a City shirt, the classy player with Premier League experience looks every bit the part.

That’s one problem area addressed by the manager who now turns his attention to the sharp end of the pitch and finding someone to help turn City’s chances into goals.

Leo on his Sky Blues future

Coventry City loan man Leo Ostigard has set out his ambitions for the second half of the season after appearing to get the green light to continue his spell with the Championship club.

The 21-year-old defender is midway through a season-long loan with the Sky Blues from Premier League strugglers Brighton and Hove Albion who, in line with most loan deals, have a recall option in January.

Ostigard has played on the right of a settled back three for nine consecutive games and made 17 starts and three sub appearances for Mark Robins since joining the club in September.

Asked if he’s enjoying his time at City and his lengthy run in the side, the Norwegian international said: “Yes, I think I have been doing better and better as the season has gone on.

Robins on big Covid questions

Coventry City boss Mark Robins has taken steps to help keep his players safe from catching coronavirus by closing down the training ground for a couple of days a week.

The Sky Blues manager is keeping his players away from Ryton early in the week when the team have a full five days to build up to a game, to limit the amount of contact they have with each other.

Robins has also introduced twice weekly Covid-19 testing at the club to keep on top of the virus that has forced another national lockdown with the NHS at stretching point and the Government desperately try to roll out their vaccination programme to protect the public.

All non-elite sports have ceased for the time being but professional sports such as football and top class rugby continue to be played behind closed doors.

But should football cease for the time being and is there a case for prioritising footballers?

Under-23s in eight goal thriller

A last minute penalty secured a point for Coventry City’s Under-23s in an eight goal thriller against Barnsley.

The Sky Blues had to work for their reward, coming from 3-0 down to pull level with three goals in the space of nine minutes before going behind again and grabbing a second equaliser at the death.

Coach Luke Tisdale fielded a young side for the home game, with the most senior players on show being Josh Eccles and Will Bapaga – both of whom featured for Mark Robins’s first team in the FA Cup defeat at Norwich City at the weekend when they went on for the last 13 minutes at Carrow Road, replacing Jordan Shipley and Gus Hamer.
