The West Midlands Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner has labelled anyone who broke Covid-19 restrictions over the New Year period “imbeciles”.

Waheed Saleem used this term while speaking at the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) coronavirus press briefing today (January 8).

Following this, he outlined that West Midlands Police are – on average – receiving 200 calls per day reporting restriction breaches.

He also said that an average of 800 people per day are being asked to leave areas due to breaching the rules.

Mr Saleem added: “We have issued a total of 18 £10,000 fines and up to December 20 we have handed out 970 fixed penalty notices.”

Despite there being a relaxation of rules over Christmas, there were still guidelines in place meaning people had to follow rules depending on what Tier their area was in.

Since the festive period, Covid-19 case numbers have been significantly rising across the country.

A “major incident” has now been declared in London as Mayor Sadiq Khan says the capital is at a crisis point.
