More than 500 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, according to the latest statistics for the city and county.

Figures released by health officials this afternoon show 213 cases have been confirmed in Leicester, while the total for wider county stands at 322 – a total of 535 infections.

That exceeds yesterday’s daily tally of 443.

Charnwood recorded 54 new infections, while the figure for the Harborough district is 58.

Hinckley and Bosworth recorded 29 new cases, and there were 47 in North West Leicestershire.

There were 39 cases in Oadby and Wigston, 42 in Blaby and 23 in the Melton district.

The number of people to have contracted the virus since the beginning of the crisis now stands at more than 32,000.

The new cases, updated today at 4pm, mean that the total number of cases across the city and county since the start of the pandemic area by area are :

  • Leicester: 21,144

  • Blaby: 3,927

  • Charnwood: 7,455

  • Harborough: 2,649

Leicester and Leicestershire remain in Tier 3, while a number of other areas of the country entered Tier 4 today.

In other coronavirus news, more than 100 Leicestershire pubs have applied for new £1,000 grants to help them through the COVID-19 closure period.

Leicestershire County Council is offering a one-off payment to support small village pubs which are unable to open their doors over Christmas and 28 grants have so far been approved.

The cash has already been received by eight pubs.

Also, approximately 20,000 people across the city and county received the first vaccination jab by Sunday, December 20.

They were largely in the vulnerable over 80s age bracket, but a number of care home workers and frontline NHS also receive the first dose of the vaccine as the nationwide rollout of the treatment continues.

There are now more than 10 locations locally – from GP surgeries to large community vaccination centres – where people are getting appointments when their turn comes.

The latest seven-day infection rates, area by area, are:

  • Leicester: 320.1 cases per 100,000
