With the shock and disappointment of today’s news about Coventry and Warwickshire going into Tier 3 restrictions, it’s good to know there’s something a bit brighter on the horizon.

Twycross Zoo is opening its doors again next week, LeicestershireLive reports.

There will be additional Covid -secure restrictions to be aware of, but fans will be able to go and see their favourite animals once again.

Visitor numbers have been restricted to just 30 per cent of normal capacity and managers have been urged to consider carefully before they let larger numbers of people through the doors.

As a result, all families must book a timeslot ahead of their visit, with bookings limited to six people.

Selected indoor animal houses as well as indoor soft play facilities are closed until further notice, with some through ways to be open.

Indoor eateries are open for takeaway only, with a breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea all still available.

The emails come out twice a day, at lunchtime and in the evening, with the latest news, what’s on and sport from across the county.

Face coverings must be worn while collecting takeaway food and drink and when entering any indoor area, including toilets, all walkthroughs and gift shops.

The zoo announced its reopening on it’s Facebook page and wrote: “We just want to say a huge thank you for your support during November – we appreciate every kind message, ticket booking, donation, animal adoption, membership and Black Friday purchase during this uncertain time.

“We can’t wait to see you again soon.”

Festive fun will be coming to the zoo with the Christmas Spectacular event, starting from Saturday, December 5, on selected days.

Families will be able to meet Santa, Mrs Claus, the elves and the Ice Queen.

The zoo has struggled to meet its £650,000-a-month costs since closing to visitors for almost three months during the first lockdown.

It has been unable to claim from Government funds allocated to support zoos during the coronavirus crisis, with chief executive, Dr Sharon Redrobe, previously warning of a “mass cull” if the shortfall continues.

The MP for Bosworth, Dr Luke Evans, is pushing the Government to open up its largely unused £100 million Zoo Animals Fund to make it easier for Twycross to secure a grant.

Currently, a centre has to be in its last 12 weeks of reserves before receiving a grant, but it can take months to find and move some of the world’s most endangered animals to suitable homes.

Book a visit to Twycross Zoo on the group’s website .
