There has been another substantial drop in the number of new coronavirus infections across Leicester and Leicestershire today.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) this afternoon updated the number of new infections to show 365 more people had caught Covid-19 accross the city and county.

It is the fourth consecutive day on which the case numbers have fallen locally.

Leicester has another 136 cases and there were 229 in the county.

Charnwood saw 62 new virus cases today and there were 29 in Hinckley and Bosworth and 22 in Blaby.

There were 35 cases in North West Leicester confirmed today and Oadby and Wigston has accumulated another 26 positive tests.

There were 43 new cases in Harborough and a dozen in Melton borough.

The new cases, updated today at 5.30pm, mean that the total number of cases across the city and county since the start of the pandemic area by area are :

  • Leicester: 15,851

  • Blaby: 2,370

  • Charnwood: 5,884

  • Hinckley and Bosworth: 2,284

  • Melton: 978

Today senior politicians, NHS bosses and the Leicestershire Police appealed again for people to follow the national lockdown rules to try to bring down the high infection rates.

They warned hospital beds were filling up with Covid-19 patients putting care services under extreme pressure.

Public health officials have also warned that there will be tight lockdown restrictions at Christmas if local infection rates do not dip significantly by the end of the national measures on December 2.

The latest seven-day infection rates, area by area, are:

  • Leicester: 509.3 cases per 100,000

  • Blaby: 440.3 cases per 100,000

  • Charnwood: 358.9 cases per 100,000

  • Harborough: 332.6 cases per 100,000
