News that Woolworths was set to return to the high street after 11 years appear to be fake.
Fans of the brand which closed its stores in 2009 were delighted to hear that it would be opening three trial stores across the UK after a tweet from Woolworths UK revealed the news.
In the tweet, Woolworths UK said: “Our return will be via. 3 trial stores, that are being planned to open late 2021. Can’t wait to be back!”
But now The Very Group, who own the Woolworths trademark, have revealed that the news is not true.
A spokesperson for The Very Group commented: “We own the Woolworths trademark in the UK. The Twitter account UKWoolworths is not connected to The Very Group.”
Suspicion surrounding the legitimacy of the claim first arose as the Twitter account is unverified and the website that they had referred to, yourwoolworths.co.uk, didn’t work. What’s more, the account also keeps spelling Woolworths incorrectly, referring to it as Woolsworths.
The Woolworths brand opened its first store back in 1909 and the chain went into administration in 2008.
