Former Aston Villa defender Martin Keown believes that Jack Grealish is even better shape fitness wise than he was last season, after watching him perform against Leeds United on Friday evening.
Captain Grealish has been a significant reason as to why Villa have, prior to this past Friday, flourished in the early stages of the season.
Though the Lions were well beaten by newly promoted Leeds, thanks to Patrick Bamford’s second half hat-trick, there was a moment when Grealish carried the ball from his own box into the visitors’ area, jinking past challenges before getting his shot away.
Leeds stopper Ilan Meslier was equal to his attempt, and Keown thinks that had Grealish found the net then the match would’ve had a very different outcome.
Nevertheless, he’s been impressed by the skipper’s displays thus far and sees physical improvements in his game.
“He uses his body very well and he is very strong,” Keown told Football Focus. “I feel he is fitter now as well.

“He slows his opponent down and he knows where he wants to go, and you cannot stop him.
“But, in the end, this goalkeeper [Ilan Meslier], this young kid, this French player, he is fantastic. He just stands up brilliantly. And that was the defining moment of the game. If they had scored at that point then it could have been different.”
