Gabby Agbonlahor has revealed how Paul Lambert brutally put Ron Vlaar in his place after the former Aston Villa captain tried to get out of a trip to Portugal.
Villa had been dumped out the FA Cup at the third round stage by Sheffield United in January 2014 and Lambert wanted to take his players away for a mid-season training camp in Portugal.
A number of players weren’t keen on the idea so Agbonlahor and Vlaar, the club’s captain at the time, approached Lambert and attempted to change his mind.
But the meeting with the Scotsman didn’t go as planned.
Agbonlahor told talkSPORT Breakfast : “I think it was February and we were out of the FA Cup and you normally get a couple of weeks off, don’t you, when you’re out of the FA Cup.
“Lambert wanted to take us to Portugal but we didn’t want to go to Portugal for a week. February, it’s not hot.
“We thought ‘can we just have the days off gaffer?’ It was cold in Portugal and we wanted the days off so we could go to Dubai or something.
“We went into his office, me and Ron Vlaar, and we asked Paul Lambert: ‘We don’t want to go to Portugal’.
“Ron Vlaar had kids he didn’t see a lot and we wanted the time off ourselves.
“Paul Lambert was ruthless. He said: ‘Ron, I don’t like watching you play most weekends but I still have to watch you’.
“I couldn’t believe he said it to him. He said: ‘Ron, if you want to see your kids, get them a flight over or buy them a TV or something’.
“He was ruthless that day and saying ‘No, we are going to Portugal. Get out’.”
