A key role
Romaine Sawyers acted as the chief instigator in Karlan Grant’s move to West Brom this summer!
The Albion midfielder is one of many players at The Hawthorns who new signing Grant is familiar with, be it as an ex-teammate or a friend away from football.
Forward Grant, 23, arrived at the club on Thursday after protracted negotiations which have dominated Albion’s window – but they bore fruit right before the transfer deadline.
There are plenty of faces in Slaven Bilic’s squad that Grant knows which ought to enable him to bed in quickly to his new surroundings, among them Grady Diangana, Semi Ajayi, Callum Robinson and Darnell Furlong.
Another is Sawyers; the Albion academy product, who is himself embarking on his first top flight campaign, has been keeping in regular contact with the striker as Albion structured a deal with Huddersfield Town.

Slaven Bilic remains in the dark over whether Callum Robinson will be available or not for the visit of Burnley this coming Monday.
West Brom forward Robinson, who has three goals to his name this season, was on international duty with Ireland during the domestic break and, in that time, an individual in the Ireland camp returned a positive Covid-19 test.
Having been deemed to have come into close contact with that figure, Robinson was required to enter into a period of self-isolation for 14 days.
That period includes the beginning of next week, and the welcoming of the Clarets to The Hawthorns, yet Albion remain uncertain as to whether he’ll be permitted to feature because of the different ruling between Ireland and England.
West Bromwich Albion look set to come face to face with former striker Jay Rodriguez on Monday night.
‘Jay Rod’ was a big favourite with Albion fans and spent two seasons at the Hawthorns, netting 33 goals.
In that time, despite his own healthy goals return, he suffered the disappointment of relegation in his first campaign and then defeat in the play-off semi finals as the Baggies sought a return to the top flight.
The Clarets triggered his £10m release clause to take him back to his hometown club.
West Brom striker Kenneth Zohore has completed a loan move to Millwall until January 16, in a deal that beat Friday’s 5pm domestic deadline.
Danish forward Zohore, who found the net just five times last season – two of those coming from the penalty spot – only arrived at The Hawthorns last summer for a fee that could cost Albion, and earn Cardiff City, as much as £8m.
He slipped behind fellow new signing Charlie Austin and the revitalised Hal Robson-Kanu last term. His cause under Slaven Bilic hasn’t been helped by the emergence of Callum Robinson as a centre forward option and the arrival of Karlan Grant.
