Kasper Schmeichel produced a superb point-blank save to frustrate England and help seal a surprise win for Denmark at Wembley.
The Leicester City goalkeeper showed incredible reactions to stop Mason Mount’s header from just a few yards out on his way to a clean sheet.
Christian Eriksen scored the only goal of the game for Denmark, from the penalty spot, with former City centre-back Harry Maguire sent off for two bookable offences in the first half.
The result leaves England third in their Nations League group with two games to play.
Harvey Barnes was not included in the squad for the Three Lions, having made his debut in a friendly against Wales last week.
Elsewhere in League A Group 2, Youri Tielemans and Timothy Castagne helped Belgium beat Iceland 2-1 to return to the top of the group.
Tielemans played the 90 minutes, while Castagne came on as a left-wing-back for the final 20 minutes. Dennis Praet was an unused substitute, but his inclusion in the squad suggests he has overcome the knee injury that has troubled him for a couple of weeks.
For Northern Ireland, Jonny Evans kept Norway’s Erling Haaland quiet, but was substituted at half-time with the BBC reporting that he had been holding his groin during the opening 45 minutes.
The centre-back, who was captaining his country, was the only player to keep his place with 10 changes made for the clash, which ended in a 1-0 defeat.

An injury for Evans would be particularly bad news given Caglar Soyuncu missed Turkey’s 2-2 draw with Serbia because of a hamstring problem.
Cengiz Under did play nearly the whole match though as Turkey came from 2-0 down to grab a point.
For Wales, Danny Ward will have been disappointed not to feature after number one Wayne Hennessey came off injured, only to be replaced by Stoke’s Adam Davies, leaving the City goalkeeper watching on from the bench.
Ryan Giggs’ side won 1-0 against Bulgaria.
