A new wayfinding scheme is being lined up to help direct City of Culture tourists to Coventry’s top attractions.

The city council is working on the plans to have a new signage installed by the spring as part of a multi-million pound project.

Plans are expected to step up in the coming weeks with the authority hoping to announce a partner once the procurement stage has been completed.

New signage and maps will help link up visitors to key attractions in the city, with council bosses hoping it will emulate successful wayfinding projects used in major cities.

Cllr Patricia Hetherton, cabinet member for city services, said: “The new wayfinding signage will be a helpful and easy way for visitors to find their way around.

“We’re using a tried and trusted approach which has worked in other major cities, using simple maps in places where visitors might travel, helping people navigate and find all of our key attractions.”

Little detail is known on the number of signs and the design – which is still being finalised – although a large chunk of funding is already in place from the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Speaking at a council scrutiny board meeting on the scheme last month, councillors were told new maps and signs will be put in place to provide background to historical figures and sites to help showcase the city’s culture.

Jo Shore, head of public realm at the council, said: “It will provide little nuggets of information about the city as you walk around.

“You might look to the footpath as you are walking along and you will be able to see that this was perhaps the route taken by Lady Godiva once.

“We are readying this for millions of visitors with City of Culture and it’s important that people can find their way around and we have clear wayfinding in place. We are about to finalise designs on this and agree what the final look and feel will be.”
