Coronavirus cases in Leicestershire jump by 98 in just 24 hours

All but one district of Leicestershire has seen an increase in coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.

There are in total 98 new cases reported for the county – up on the 85 new cases reported yesterday.

The latest Public Health England figures show 62 new cases in Leicester city, while the borough of Oadby and Wigston, which recently joined the city in a stricter lockdown, had five new cases of coronavirus.

Blaby saw 16 new cases reported, which is the biggest increase outside the city. There have now been almost 750 cases in the small district, which includes areas like Enderby, Broughton Astley, Countesthorpe and Braunstone Town.

Charnwood saw nine new cases recorded, Hinckley and Bosworth’s total went up by three, Harborough added two cases and North West Leicestershire added one.

No new cases were recorded in Melton, where 247 cases have been recorded since the start of the pandemic.

The local figures updated at 4.30pm on Sunday, September 20 are:

  • Leicester – 6,513 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 1,838.7
  • Blaby – 749 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 737.7
  • Charnwood – 1,081 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 581.6
  • Harborough – 495 total cases -. Rate per 100,000 population: 527.7
  • Hinckley and Bosworth – 656 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 579.8
  • Melton – 247 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 482.3
  • North West Leicestershire – 383 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 369.7
  • Oadby and Wigston – 684 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 1,199.7

Restrictions preventing people from mixing with other households will come into force in Oadby and Wigston on Tuesday, while parks have had their opening hours reduced already to prevent evening gatherings.

In Blaby district, which is the third-worst area of Leicestershire by population rate, dozens of pupils at Kirby Muxloe Primary School will not be going to school tomorrow after a teacher tested positive for coronavirus.

All Year 1 pupils, as well as a small number of children from other years, will have to isolate at home for 14 days, although their families will not be required to isolate.

The local figures updated at 4.30pm on Saturday, September 19, were:

  • Leicester – 6,451 total cases. Rate per 100,000 population: 1,821.2
  • Blaby – 733 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 722
  • Charnwood – 1,072 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 576.8
  • Harborough – 493 total cases -. Rate per 100,000 population: 525.5
  • Hinckley and Bosworth – 653 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 577.2
  • Melton – 247 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 482.3
  • North West Leicestershire – 382 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 368.7
  • Oadby and Wigston – 679 total cases – Rate per 100,000 population: 1,190.9

Across the UK on Sunday, a further 3,899 new Covid-19 cases and 18 deaths have been reported.
