Train users hoping to travel from Coventry Railway Station this weekend have been left disappointed – and new pictures reveal the reason why.

Earlier in the month, it was confirmed that Network Rail would be carrying out some essential works along the West Coast Main Line.

This means services running between Birmingham International and Rugby will be disrupted over the Bank Holiday weekend, ending on Monday, August 31.

Today, Network Rail have revealed that the work is well underway on a section of track north of Coventry Railway Station, between the city’s main station and Canley.

Pictures posted on social media show that the old railway sleepers are being replaced on this section of track, and have already been removed.

The work comes as part of a multi-million pound railway improvement programme.

What disruption can be expected?

While the work will likely benefit passengers in the long run, an unfortunate consequence is a weekend of disruption.

The work is being carried out between Birmingham International and Rugby, and, while trains will continue to run between the two stations on a diverted route – via  Nuneaton – West Coast Mainline services between Birmingham New Street and London Euston will not be calling at  Coventry Railway Station.

For customers hoping to travel to and from  Coventry,  replacement buses are being put in place.

As a result, customers are being warned that they should allow for extra time  in order to complete their journeys.

Passengers on West Midlands Railway, Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry services will all be affected.

Works are also set to be carried out on the line between Leamington Spa and Nuneaton,  closing it to train travel the same weekend.

Buses will also replace trains between  Leamington  and Nuneaton via Coventry on all three days.

According to West Midlands Railway: ” Network Rail  is undertaking an extensive programme of maintenance to improve the reliability of railway infrastructure such as tracks and signals.”
