So, it looks like Ben Chilwell could finally be leaving Leicester City following months of transfer speculation – and Leicester City fans think that the deal could prove to be good business.
Chelsea are on the verge of landing the defender for what is claimed will be a ‘sizeable fee’.
Frank Lampard and his recruitment team are said to have made a massive breakthrough in talks to sign his top defensive target, part thanks to the Foxes’ failure to qualify for the 2020-21 Champions League, the Telegraph reports.
That failure has seen them forced to agree to Chelsea’ demands after the London club offered what is being described as a ‘sizeable fee’ for his services, thought to be in the region of £50m plus add-ons.
The defender is currently nursing a foot injury but has had it checked representatives sent by Lampard are expected to give the transfer move the all-clear.
Chilwell has been linked with a Stamford Bridge transfer move for a number of months with the 23-year-old said to be near to the very top of their transfer wishlist throughout their multi-window embargo.
Here is what Leicester City fans had to say about the breaking news…
Jimmy Conway: Chilwell is a nice lad and I wish him all the best. Chelsea will be paying a lot for him and are betting on him vastly improving under Lampard. They are taking all the risks here. It’s another great deal for LCFC.
Gary Martin: Given the amount of stick that Chilwell has already received from Chelsea fans in the last month, it will be interesting to see how they welcome him and how quickly they turn on him, if he has a bad game/run in form.
Jamie Barnard: Chilwell is painfully one-footed. His end product is pretty poor. He’s consistently shown a lack of grit and winner’s mentality (back-slapping his opposition mates before/after big games). His form at points last season saw calls for Fuchs. £50m PLUS ADD-ONS? Lovely stuff.
Will Holyland: Good business or not, Chilwell was a youth product and an England international being a selling club is becoming a trend.
Callum Martin: Chelsea doing bits. They could challenge next season with Chilwell. Good business for us though, if the add-ons are decent.
Jack Johnson: It’ll be really disappointing to see Chilwell go. He was a key player at times for us last season and has clear potential to grow into one of the best left-backs in the league – but if the sale allows us to reinvest and improve the squad as a whole then it’s a great deal.
Tom Pawley: No one watches Kasper’s goal kicks go straight over their head better than Ben Chilwell. That will be missed.
James Knight: Losing Chilwell isn’t a mega-disaster on its own, but [it’s] kind of weirdly just letting it happen? The Bournemouth collapse was BAD in every way and [it’s] becoming urgent to sign some human players. Right now we’re still starting Luke Thomas and Wes Morgan week one.
