Council bosses say they are working on plans to lift a ban which would allow vans to return to Coventry’s London Road tip – but no date has been set.

The London Road tip reopened on May 18 with a popular booking-only system after closing during the early stages of the coronavirus lockdown.

Since the restart, vans and vehicles with trailers have not been allowed in to help ‘maximise space’, but talks are now underway to let them return now initial demand has reduced.

A council spokesman said “The current booking system at the tip is working really well.

“We have received lots of compliments about the process including the steps put in place on the site to ensure the health and safety of site visitors and staff.

“Demand has reduced since the initial opening “flurry” and you can usually get booked in within a couple of days at present.

The CCTV centre for Coventry could soon be based at Whitley Depot

“With regards to vans we are looking at how we might be able to safely allow vans back onto site.”

However, businesses have been reminded that they are not permitted at the tip as the service is for residents only.

“The tip is funded through council tax for residents of the city to dispose of their own household waste free of charge,” a spokesman added.

“Businesses should not be bringing waste to the site. They have a legal duty of care to manage and pay for of their waste to be disposed of utilising suitably licensed waste contractors.

“Any businesses attempting to dispose of their waste would be turned away regardless of what vehicle they came to the site in.

“Some people do try to sneak it in and if the waste is suspected to be from a business the site staff will inspect the waste and can refuse entry.”
