A city centre sports store and gym has closed for good, the company has confirmed.

DW Sports, in Humberstone Gate, has closed its doors for the final time.

The confirmation of the permanent closure of the store and the gym comes after the company announced last week that it was appointing administrators.

In the run up to the administration, DW Sports – which was founded by former Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan – operated 73 gyms and 75 retail sites across the UK.

A spokesperson for DW Sports said that, like many retailers, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and trends in consumer online spending habits, the whole DW Sports retail estate has been reviewed and all DW Sports retail stores in the UK will close.

So far, 25 stores have closed and the remaining sites will continue to trade under the administration, subject to stock remaining available.

Of the 73 gym locations, 59 gyms are trading today in England and Northern Ireland.

There are a further 14 gyms in England, Scotland and Wales which are not yet able to open due to Government restrictions in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the spokesperson, the company is currently communicating with its members across the UK to inform them of the next steps relating to their membership.

It is the company’s intention to work with the administrators to save as many gym sites as possible.

Martin Long, DW Sports group CEO, said: “This has clearly been a very difficult decision for the business, especially in Leicester where we have become a real part of the sporting community and we thank the staff and our members for the many years we have enjoyed in the area.”
