More than 3,000 Covid law breaches in Coventry have been reported to West Midlands Police since lockdown began.

A Freedom of Information request to the force found 3,274 Covid-related incidents were recorded between March 23 and July 22.

However, the police did not disclose how many of those in Coventry led to fines.

According to the most data released by the National Police Chiefs’ Council, 376 fines for Covid breaches have been issued by West Midlands Police as a whole up to July 20, although that is not broken up by area.

Police said the majority of calls have been for dispersals of large groups.

A fixed penalty notice of £100 can be issued as a ‘last resort’ to anyone who fails to comply with restrictions, £200 for second-time offenders, doubling on each further repeat up to £3,200. Anyone who does not pay the fine can end up in court.

Other reasons for fines can include driving with non-household members, house parties and camping, as well as a fine of up to £100 or £50 if paid within 14 days for failing to wear a face mask while shopping or on public transport.

Designated local council officers can also issue fines for breaches or close a premises for failing to follow coronavirus laws under new legislation that came into force on July 18.

Across England and Wales 18,669 fines for alleged breaches of coronavirus lockdown laws have been issued from March 27 to July 20, according to data released by the National Police Chiefs’ Council.

That has significantly relaxed between July 7 and July 20, with just eight fines issued in England and none issued in Wales.

National Police Chiefs’ Council chairman Martin Hewitt said: “As expected the number of fines police forces are issuing continues to fall as lockdown restrictions are further eased.

“However there are still some restrictions in place and they remain important for the protection of the public’s health and wellbeing. Police will continue to engage, explain, encourage and only as a last resort will we use enforcement.

“We all need to continue to be personally responsible and follow the rules, whether that be around face masks in shops or very large gatherings. By following the rules we are all doing our bit to prevent the virus spreading.”
