Ahead of the 20/21 Championship season, Birmingham City have confirmed that Aitor Karanka will take charge of the club as their new head coach.
Karanka succeeds Pep Clotet who parted ways with the club towards the conclusion of last season. Clotet had tendered his resignation prior to his departure, and was expected to stay until the end of the 19/20 season, but Blues’ post-lockdown form led to a early parting of the ways.

Karanka arrives at Blues with plenty of second-tier experience having spent time at Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest – over five years in total.
With Boro, Karanka was able to lead the side back to the Premier League, but the team quickly fell away – and the head coach has been looking for work ever since his fresh start at Nottingham Forest in 2018 led to him requesting a release from his contract after a frustrating year at the City Ground.
Now, the new Blues boss will have to get to grips with his latest side before the start of the next season.
Blues had teased his appointment with a number of videos of an empty and depleted Wast Hills training ground, leading to speculation from fans that a confirmation on a decision was coming close, and that it wasn’t just pretty shots of the training complex – thankfully for Blues’s Twitter administrator, the club were able to deliver with a drip-feed teaser that led to Karanka’s new head coach office, where the plan to take Blues back to the top will be prepared.
