Forest Green Rovers head coach Mark Cooper says he has almost resigned himself to losing captain Joseph Mills this summer.
The 30-year-old right-sided wing-back or midfielder has made 70 appearances for the club over the past two seasons, scoring 12 goals, after a spell in Australia with Perth Glory.
He is out of contract, but is yet to agree an extended deal at the New Lawn with other clubs, reportedly including promoted pair Swindon Town and Plymouth Argyle, interested in signing him.
“We have made him an offer to stay but in the current climate everyone is cutting their cloth a bit,” said Cooper.
“We have not heard anything back and at some point over the next few days we are probably going to have to move on – if players don’t want to play for the club then we move on.
“He has been brilliant for us but if someone offers him another £500 a week and he wants to move his family then we can’t do anything about that.
“He did brilliantly for us and I would love him to stay and we have made him the best offer we can and if he doesn’t re-sign then it will have come down to money.”
Mills started his career with Southampton and has also played for Reading and Oldham, as well as having loan spells with Scunthorpe, Doncaster, Burnley, Oldham and Shrewsbury.
His elder brother Matt was at Forest Green last season as a player-coach but released in the summer and has since announced his retirement.
He was freed along with Dayle Grubb, Elliott Frear, Farrend Rawson – who has joined Mansfield Town – George Williams, Junior Mondal, Kevin Dawson and Liam Shephard, while Nathan McGinley rejected a new deal to join Motherwell.
“I wanted to keep Nathan McGinley but he was in that bracket where we got some compensation,” said Cooper.
“I wanted him to stay but he has got a good move to the Scottish Premiership, we got some renumeration and we wish him good luck.”
Forest Green have signed eight players this summer – Dan Sweeney (Barnet), Nicky Cadden (Greenock Morton), Jack Evans (Blackburn Rovers), Kane Wilson (West Brom), Luke McGee (Portsmouth), Jake Young (Sheffield United), Jamille Matt (Newport) and Jordan Moore-Taylor (MK Dons) and Academy youngsters Vaughn Covil and Harvey Bunker have signed professional deals.
