A child has been taken to hospital after being involved in a collision with a car in South Wigston this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Canal Street in the town shortly after 1pm today.

There were reports that the air ambulance was spotted flying above the area, however, Leicestershire Police were not able to confirm this to be the case.

The youngster was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where they are being treated for their injuries.

A police spokesman said: “We were called by the East Midlands Ambulance Service at 1.15pm today to a collision involving a car and a child in Canal Street, South Wigston.

“They were taken to hospital, however, their injuries are neither life-threatening, or life-changing.

“In the meantime, inquiries into the incident are continuing.”

He could not provide any further information on the type of injuries sustained, or the age of the child involved.

There is also no suggestion, at this stage, that anybody has been arrested in connection with the incident.

It is understood that a section of Canal Street was closed during the rescue operation.

The road was reopen by 3pm.
