New stadium plans

Coventry City have announced a shock deal that will see the University of Warwick provide land to the football club with a vision of building the club a new stadium.

The Sky Blues spent the 2019-20 season in Birmingham, playing their home matches at St. Andrew’s after failing to strike a deal with Ricoh Arena owners Wasps Group.

The club are currently in negotiations to return to the stadium for next season but do have an option to remain in Birmingham should they wish.

But they have today confirmed an agreement with the University of Warwick that will see them acquire land, south of the City, and say that they will soon provide supporters with detailed plans for an environmentally-friendly stadium and a “light train station”.

How much?

Coventry City’s new stadium, set to be built at the University of Warwick, will cost nearly £100m says a leading football finance expert.

The Sky Blues have announced a partnership with the nearby university to acquire land to build their new home.

The club say the stadium will be built and operated by the club on agricultural land south-west of the city.

It will also be built with a railway station, the club hope, and the whole project will be “environmentally-friendly”.

“If they are going to be ambitious then the capacity of the stadium has to a minimum of 30,000,” football finance expert Kieran Maguire told BBC CWR.

Fan reaction

Supporters have said they are “delighted” with the announcement of a partnership between Coventry City Football Club and the University of Warwick with a vision of building a new stadium.

The Sky Blues spent the 2019-20 season in Birmingham, playing their home matches at St Andrew’s after failing to strike a deal with Ricoh Arena owners Wasps Group.

Pete Griffiths and Mark Dimmock have issued the following statement on behalf of the Sky Blues Talk supporters’ community.

“As supporters of Coventry City we are delighted by the joint statement from CCFC and Warwick University. It is all the more pleasing given the assurances we received earlier this year from Dave Boddy and Joy Seppala on the priority that CCFC and Sisu were placing on having a stadium of our own and their desire to have continued close relationships between the supporters, the club and the owners,” they said.

Done deal!

Wolves defender Ryan Giles has returned to Coventry City on a season-long loan deal.

The 20-year-old left-back spent the second half of the Sky Blues’ title-winning League One campaign with the club, featuring only once against Rotherham United.

It was later revealed that Giles’ time at Ryton-on-Dunsmore had been somewhat of a bedding-in period with Mark Robins keen to see what the youngster was all about before making a decision on bringing him back to the club this summer.

And now they have secured his return, putting pen to paper on a season-long loan deal in the Championship that will see him arrive as a replacement for Norwich City-bound Sam McCallum.
