WORMELOW Cricket Club adapted to the Government guidelines to get their cricket season underway with an intra-club match.

Prior to the match a minute’s silence was observed by all players, officials and spectators in respect of Jeewan Puri who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Puri represented the club on 99 occasions and picked up 179 wickets with his off spin, in addition to being a fantastic cricketer he was also an absolute gentleman.

Puri is sadly missed by everyone at Wormelow.

Once the action got underway the Tom Cutler XI posted 214-6 from their allotted 40 overs.

Captain Cutler led the way with him and Rich Stafford, who was making a welcome return to action after suffering a serious achilles injury in 2019, both hitting half centuries.

Luke Jones chipped in with 30.

With the ball opposing skipper Dan Hale led the way for his side with 2-38, receiving good support from Oliver Langford 1-18 and Joe Snow 1-21.

After the interval, the game was evenly poised throughout the run chase before some quality death bowing saw the Dan Hale XI come up just seven runs short finishing on 207-8.

Owen Jones hit a superb half century and received good support from Jasper Linley-Adams (28), Tom Price (26) and Elliott Williams (20).

Veterans Ben Gunn (2-26) and Jamie Langford (2-30) led the way with the ball whilst Cutler and Jake Edmonds both bowled with great accuracy to concede just 15 runs each from their five overs.

All are eagerly awaiting the rematch this Saturday.

Wormelow chairman Ian Herbert said: “After a crazy few months it was fantastic to finally see some cricket played at Kennelfield.

“Our superb groundsmen have kept the playing area in good condition since April and that, combined with the efforts of several management committee members who ensured appropriate signage and hand sanitizing measures were in place meant that we were able to get cricket played pretty much as soon as we got the green light from the ECB.

“It was a little different to cricket how we know it, but all the players and officials adapted well and followed the guidelines.

“It was also great to see a healthy number of spectators in attendance. Hopefully we get plenty of good weather over the next couple of months so that plenty more junior and senior matches can be played.”

Burghill CC also played an intra-club match on Saturday with several juniors making their senior debut.

Then on Sunday a young Burghill side made the journey to Brockhampton and played a 35 over match in the sunshine.

Burghill posted 230-4 and Brockhampton’s young side were all out for 170, which included a fantastic century by Tom Skerrett.

Saturday also saw cricket return to Wormelow with an .
