The upcoming summer transfer window could be one of the most bizarre ones ever seen in modern football.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic having such an impact on clubs’ finances, teams like Coventry City will be more reluctant than ever to spend big money on signings.
So, here’s what we know so far and what is yet to be confirmed…
What do we know about the transfer window?
We do know that the Championship transfer window will not open until the 2019-20 season has reached its conclusion.
By now, the window would be officially open in any orthodox season, but this campaign is far from that.
The Championship season is set to finish at the end of July, with the last league fixtures due to be played on July 22 ahead of the play-offs.
In other major European leagues, the Serie A have announced its window will open on September 1.
Ligue 1 has opened its transfer window already – with the season being curtailed early – but only for domestic deals.
However, La Liga and the Bundesliga are yet to announce when its respective transfer windows will begin and end.
What we don’t know yet?
There is no official date for when Championship clubs can begin bringing players in for next season, from the UK or abroad.
Likewise, there has been no confirmation when the transfer window will open. Usually, the window opens on June 1 and ends on August 31 – meaning there is almost three months for clubs to do their business.
This could be extended with the current uncertainties surrounding football clubs.
UEFA have advised its members to use October 5 as the cut-off date for when the transfer window will close.
The European football governing body has also highlighted October 6 as the deadline for teams to register players for next season’s Champions League and Europa League.
“The deadline for player registration for the group stage of the 2020-21 UEFA club competitions has been set to October 6,” a statement from UEFA read.
“As a result, the UEFA executive committee called on all member associations to adopt a harmonised end date to the upcoming summer transfer window, with this date set as October 5, 2020.”
