A POPULAR city pub will not be re-opening following lockdown as landlords say coronavirus has meant the business is no longer viable.

Adrian and Alison have run The Cricketers Pub in Angel Street for almost nine years but have announced they will not be returning as the landlords after the pandemic.

A post on the Cricketers Facebook page said: “Hi everyone,

“Due to the current economic climate it is not viable to re-open the pub and so it is with heartfelt sadness that I let you know that after nearly nine years I will not be returning as licensee.

“I have loved my time at this fantastic pub and met some wonderful people as well as some amazing new friends.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow licensees, Ady and Donna Bird and Denise and Fred Jones for always being there.

“I’d also like to thank my awesome team, past and present for their hard work, commitment and unwavering support throughout the good and the more difficult times.

“I wish you all the best of luck in your future careers.

“Finally, my last thanks go to you lovely lot. My loyal and brilliant customers for being ace, for your support, for your continued custom and commitment to your local pub.

“I hope everyone is safe and well during these still crazy times and I hope to see you all again soon.

“Take care guys. My love to you all.”

It is not yet known what will become of The Cricketers Pub, but it is thought many more landlords will suffer as a result of the pandemic.

Tim Churchman, landlord at The Bridge at Tibberton, said that despite the government’s announcement that pubs are able to re-open in July, many businesses have already lost too much money to survive.

Mr Churchman, 55, said: “Our pubs are in danger of going under. Any pub landlord that tells you different must be in their own bubble. Unless you own the building, the chances are low of surviving and that’s the truth.”
