Callum O’Hare will be leaving Aston Villa after it emerged that the club had not offered the young playmaker a new contract, with his current deal due to expire imminently.

O’Hare, who has spent this season on loan at promoted Coventry City, would have naturally sought to remain at his boyhood club, but the Athletic report that the Lions have decided against extending his stay at Villa Park and he’ll now be looking for his next career move.

O’Hare scored four goals in 40 appearances for the Sky Blues, who grew very fond of the attacking midfielder during his spell across the city at St Andrew’s.

He had a similar impact at League Two Carlisle United in the second half of last season.

Villa, who are still battling hard to remain in the Premier League next season, have some big calls to make on the recruitment front in the coming summer transfer window.

It’s fair to say, though, that the idea of letting O’Hare leave for nothing isn’t one that has gone down well with many Villa fans, who believe he could play a role in the worse case scenario and the Lions drop back into the Championship.

Here’s what they’ve had to say on the latest O’Hare news.

Aston Villa fans on O’Hare update

Delphinho : Fantastic. One of the players I thought might be useful in the Championship for us. I suppose we still have Trezeguet, El Ghazi and Wesley to look forward to though…

Mr MWB: I would’ve liked us to have offered a contract to O’Hare but yet again we’re letting a player with potential go for practically nothing

HomeOfTheVilla : With O’Hare not being offered a contract you just know that’ll come back to haunt us like other Villa young prospects we seem to let go. Albrighton and Traore being prime examples

Tom Cowley: Also the whining about O’Hare is getting boring. He’s obviously just not good enough. He’s not 16/17 any more

Aston Villa’s academy has been a success in recent years – but others are benefiting.

That is no different for talented youngster Callum O’Hare, who is set to depart the club after reaching a contract standstill.

O’Hare broke onto the scene shortly after Villa’s relegation, but was never offered a true run at the first-team under Steve Bruce and Dean Smith.

However, he managed to show his prowess at both Carlisle and Coventry City – helping the latter earn promotion this season.

.

The youngster’s contract is set to expire at the end of the month, and Villa have offered a deal.

However, O’Hare will need promises about first-team football to sign on the dotted line. He appeared in two-thirds of Coventry’s League One minutes this season, and would need an equal amount of game time to agree to new terms.

Coventry are watching on, are interested, and can offer O’Hare all that he wants.

It would now seem that the player is set to leave Villa – but clubs cannot move in for him until later in June. Until June 30 he will be a Villa player.

There is still time on the clock for a deal to be made, but it is ticking away.

JDH : I just don’t understand this club… O’Hare in Championship next year could have done a job.

In1982: So apparently we never even offered Callum O’Hare a contract in the first place lol

Adam Wright: Would definitely keep O’Hare till we know what division we’re in. Doesn’t make sense to me. Can see us regretting this one

AVFCchats : Looks like we’re going down and we don’t give O’Hare a new deal? Seems stupid to me

Connor : Hepburn-Murphy and O’Hare leaving for free at the end of the season is only gonna bite us, O’Hare will be a big player come 3/4 years

Darren Probert : Strange not to offer O’Hare a new deal – we might just need him in the Championship
