A MOTHER and son are both making strides in their progression at Ross Golf Club by reducing their respective handicaps.

Lady vice captain Sally Fycun and her teenage son, Timmy will go into their 2020 golfing seasons with considerable confidence.

Timmy, as a nine-years-old, was introduced to sport through the Tri-Golf scheme in 2013 when head professional Tim Hall’s School of Golf Academy visited Bridstow Primary School. Starting with a 54 handicap the youngster has reduced this to 14. In his journey Timmy can already point to honours board recognition as he has won the annual Alfred Kitchen Cup for Juniors.

At the same time Timmy’s Mum, Sally also started as a complete beginner in golf and has since seen her handicap plummet to 11 to make her within touching distance of becoming a coveted single figure handicap player.

Meanwhile for the Ross men’s seniors members age over-55 the completion of their annual Winter Pairs League programme is near completion.

The league has seen 30 pairings take part in 10 matches each to decide the winners of the Patrick Curtis Shield.

Tim Lewis and Bryan Davis, with a 16 points haul, had looked home and dry as champions throughout the winter. However, almost from nowhere the experienced duo of Jim Wilkinson and Martin Johnson have emerged with currently a 14 points total in the bag.

A sizable victory in their final match could well see them declared champions with the number of holes won over their best eight matches played.

The first competition of the year for Ross Ladies saw 49 members competing in a nine-hole Texas Scramble.

The winners on the front nine were Nadia Stirling, Ellie Teasdale and Ruth Kirchmeier with 29.5.

The winners on the back nine were Christine Baldwin, Amanda Marshall and Sally Fycun with 29.8.

Later in January 46 ladies swapped muddy conditions for a welcome frosty day to play in a nine-hole greensomes competition.

In first place were Pat Johnson and Diane Martin with 19 points.

Back to the all too familiar muddy fairways 42 ladies played in a nine-hole Four Ball Better Ball competition.

Pat Johnson and Lois Price were in joint first place with Ruth Kirchmeier and Nadia Stirling, both pairs scoring 19 points.
